A Systems Approach to Modelling Chlorine Decay in Water Dis- Tribution Systems
نویسنده
چکیده
Disinfectant concentration (i.e. mainly monochloramine and dichlo-ramine in the present case) at every point in a water distribution system is an important indicator of water quality. However chlorine decays in water due to reactions with various substances and thus possibly fails to disinfect the distribution system properly. In particular bioolm formed by bacteria on the walls of distribution system pipes may exhibit water quality problems due to greater resistance against chlorine. This paper gives an outline of two experiments designed for a 1.4 km long test rig aimed at establishing the relationships between chlorine decay in water and ow rate, initial chlorine concentration, or amount of bioolm present. The system under investigation is described with emphasis on processes related to water quality. The experimental setup and problems involved in collecting data in a system like this are discussed. Finally the goals, ideas, and a sketch of the design of the proposed experiments are presented and anticipated results of these experiments are given. The approach taken in this paper is inspired by systems science, viewing the test rig as a system of independent variables ((ow rate, initial disinfectant concentration), dependent variables (disinfectant residual, bioolm), and parameters (e.g. temperature , pipe material, source water quality, initial bioolm present) and their relationships .

Switching fuzzy modelling and control scheme using T-S fuzzy systems with nonlinear consequent parts
This paper extends the idea of switching T-S fuzzy systems with linear consequent parts to nonlinear ones. Each nonlinear subsystem is exactly represented by a T-S fuzzy system with Lure’ type consequent parts, which allows to model and control wider classes of switching systems and also reduce the computation burden of control synthesis. With the use of a switching fuzzy Lyapunov function, the...

Maintaining water quality in distribution systems has become a prominent issue in the study of water networks. This thesis concentrates on disinfectant and particle counts as two important indicators of water quality. The models discussed in this work are based on data collected by the author. The experimental set-up and procedure are described and observations of particle counts, particle coun...
متن کاملUse of Artificial Neural Networks for Modelling Chlorine Residuals in Water Distribution Systems
Drinking water contaminated by microorganisms can be a major risk to public health. Disinfection is used to destroy microorganisms that are potentially dangerous to humans. In order to prevent bacterial regrowth, it is also desirable to maintain a disinfectant residual in the water distribution system. The most commonly used disinfectant is chlorine. If the dosing rate of chlorine is too low, t...

Several approaches have been introduced in literature for active noise control (ANC)systems. Since Filtered-x-Least Mean Square (FxLMS) algorithm appears to be the best choice as acontroller filter. Researchers tend to improve performance of ANC systems by enhancing andmodifying this algorithm. This paper proposes a new version of FxLMS algorithm. In many ANCapplications an online secondary pat...
متن کاملAssessing empirical linear and non-linear modelling of residual chlorine in urban drinking water systems
To evaluate the performance of chlorine disinfection in drinking water plants, managers use as an indicator the concentrations of residual chlorine within the distribution system. Because of the residence time of water in storage tanks and in distribution pipelines, data that reflect residual chlorine concentrations for a given applied dose are only available after a certain time delay. Consequ...
